I Fell
Yes, you read that right. I was cleaning the house. I had wiped everything down. I had swept and mopped every room. I had vacuumed the rugs. As I was finishing up, I was putting away all of my cleaning supplies. I was walking towards the closet where I keep the vacuum, across the floor that I had just freshly mopped. The floor was slippier than I anticipated. With vacuum in hand, I fell all the way down to the floor.
I laid there for a minute, trying to replay what just happened. I think I was in shock as to how I was just walking to put the vacuum away and ended up on the floor. I laid there for a second, making sure that nothing was majorly injured. Once I felt like it was safe, I got up and continued what I was doing. This time, I walked more carefully. As the afternoon went on, I noticed that my elbow was rather tender to the touch. It received the major brunt of the fall. By bedtime, both of my legs were rather sore, too.
Around the time that I fell, my baby was taking a nap. The loud noise of a grown human and vacuum falling to the floor did not wake her thankfully. That night as I was replaying the whole scenario, I was so grateful that it wasn’t worse. I mean, how random was it that I just slipped and fell. There have been so many times I have walked across a freshly mopped floor and did not fall. Then, the spiritual application came to me.
Just because I cannot remember a time where I slipped on a mopped floor before doesn’t mean that I was immune to the result of walking quickly across a wet floor. This same principle applies to being a Christian. You can interact with sin often and be fully aware of the results of living a sinful life. You might not see the results of your sin now; however, one day it can catch up to you. You will have gotten so comfortable with your sin that you’ll just be walking across a wet floor. Before you know it, you will have fallen. Sin has consequences. Sin will knock you down.
As I think about it now, I try to imagine that scenario like I am watching it from someone else’s point of view. I would look rather silly if I fell on the floor and then decided to stay there. If you saw everything that happened, you would think I was ridiculous for staying on the floor after I fell. This also applies to your life as a Christian. If you have fallen into sin or temptation, all you have to do is get back up. When I fell on the floor, I got back up.
The Bible tells us:
Micah 7:8 King James Version (KJV)
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
After I got up, I contacted my husband to tell him what had happened. If you have fallen spiritually and you’re having trouble getting back up, or you need someone to help you be accountable, find someone that you can trust to be that person.
I knew I had things I still needed to accomplish, so I didn’t have time to stay on the floor. Sure, my elbow probably will have a big bruise on it in a day or so. I am not going to give up or quit because I fell and got a little bruised up.
Today, my encouragement for you is to get back up. Don’t stay on the floor. You might have a bruise or two, but it is time to get up. Jesus still has things for you to accomplish.
